- Apricots/Peaches: If possible get organic as peaches are in the "dirty dozen" list (basically a list that helps you decide what to buy organic, if you are on a budget on want to prioritize your purchases)
- Blueberries: Blueberries are full of nutrition. They are great for you and great for your baby!....and they are not in the "berries" list for high allergic reactions (like strawberries) so you can give them to your babies much earlier!.
Hint: Blueberries also make a great finger food!. Right now, at 8 months, I cut them up in half or quarters (depending on size).
Hint #2: Don't get freaked out when your baby's butt looks a little purple/black!...hehe
- Oatmeal: I have been using Happy Bellies and loved it.
Just recently, I started making fresh oatmeal cereal. Basically grinding the oats and then simmering them in some water, cinnamon and nutmeg...for about 10 minutes.
I make enough for 3 feedings and it's so easy!. I figured this way they get used to the real flavor and texture of oatmeal and I can eventually stop grinding the oats and move right to regular oatmeal.
Putting it all together:
You don't need to peel the peaches if they are organic...just wash them and leave the skins as they are packed with nutrients!. If they are not organic, I would definitely recommend peeling them. Go here to see how to peel a peach.
Dice them up and simmer them in a little water until soft.
Using a hand blender or food processor, puree the cooked peaches and add the fresh blueberries.
Mix in with the cereal and voila!
Sometimes I add a couple of tablespoons (1 per baby) of organic plain whole milk yogurt. Yogurt is great for them (probiotic goodness!) and the sweetness of the peaches + blueberries, plus the spiced up oatmeal is more than enough so you don't need to by flavored yogurts -- cutting down on the sugar intake!.
(As they get older, you can start leaving the mix chunkier, then move on to just mashing and eventually just mixing everything as is)
Level of yumm-yumming: HIGH!. The little fellas LOVE this combo!
